Want to live a more intentional life?
Then you gotta get control over one little thing — your phone!
I think we’re starting to realize that these little devices are running the show, and we’re being consumed in the process. I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve lost in mindless scrolling binges over the last few years.
Don’t get me wrong, the smartphone is an incredibly powerful and useful tool, allowing us to connect in ways never thought possible. We can now work from almost anywhere, connect with folks from remote corners of the globe, and have access to endless information and entertainment.
The problem is how addicted we’ve become to our devices.
In my own life I’m developing new habits to help with my device addiction. Here are a few of the practices that are working for me:
- Turn off most notifications. Unless it is a direct message or call, I don’t need to know about it in real time. Those little red bubbles drive me bonkers, so I turned them off! A less distracted Britni is a happier Britni.
- Bedrooms are for sleeping, not scrolling. Removing my phone from the bedroom was a game changer for me. I had a habit of scrolling my feeds before I even got out of bed. This little habit had a huge negative impact on my mental wellness and mindset. It was the mental equivalent of starting my day with a bag of Doritos and a milkshake.
Using your phone for sleep sounds or an alarm clock? Get a Bluetooth speaker or an actual alarm clock, but get that damn device out of your bedroom.
- Delete the social apps that consume you the most. For me it was Twitter. What social app causes you to “lose time”? What app do you mindlessly check? What app compels your behavior?
Delete it, delete it, delete it.
- Silence is golden. Turn off your ringer and be totally unavailable for chunks of your day. Go do your work and live your life. Your messages will wait for you.
These are a few of the habits I’m working on that are having a positive impact in my life.
